The Agent remake (2020)
Charles, a retired man, gets a new lease on life when he answers a private detective’s ad and becomes a mole in an undercover investigation of a nursing home. Michael Schur was inspired to create “The Man Inside” after watching the Chilean documentary “Agent Mole.” He says, “Agent Mole” is powerful because it makes people feel something incredibly similar, regardless of age, ethnicity, or gender, and I would describe that feeling very gently as, “I need to call my mom.” We tried to do a similar thing with our show’s tone: basically, does our show contribute to that feeling of wanting to call our moms? Ted Danson, who is about 76, plays Charles, a retired engineering professor living in San Francisco. He is also a producer on the series, which stands out from most by avoiding the overly common foul-mouthed dialogue.
In fact, it’s very clean and pleasant
In the story, his wife probably died a year earlier of Alzheimer’s. He’s healthy, but perhaps bored with his routine. He has a habit of reading periodicals and newspapers, and often cuts out an interesting publication to send to his married daughter in Sacramento. One day, through the cut-out, he sees a small, short advertisement.
Charles will be the key
Looking for someone between the ages of 75 and 85 for a specific job. This leads him to a private investigator hired by a man whose mother is in a luxurious nursing home in San Francisco, some significant jewelry has been stolen, and his son wants the thief caught. So he’s hired to inspect the place and observe and report as the person who uncovers what’s going on. Ted Danson is just great in this role, which he plays with great humor.
My wife and I enjoyed watching it
It quickly becomes less about who the thief was and more about the relationship. The characters are played by a great cast, many of them old favorites we’ve known for the past 50 years. After watching the first three episodes in one evening, I watched the last five episodes in one sitting after my usual Saturday night barbecue and wine dinner. I hope the ending sets the stage for a sequel.
One of the most enjoyable we’ve ever watched
