In the timeless town of Macondo, seven generations of the Buendia family love, forget, and cannot escape their past and destiny. This is Netflix’s most expensive Latin American production to date, with Colombian crews and locals involved. Communities are creating the series’ props and sets. 100 Years of Solitude is one of the greatest conventions of Spanish literature. Its style is unparalleled, and its scope exceeds imagination. Its characters are so well-drawn that any screenwriter would have no problem writing them for the screen. However, the seemingly insurmountable problem of adapting the novel was its time. Compressing a hundred years of family and nation history was an impossible task. Almost 60 years after its publication, the novel has found a cinematic home on Netflix. Only streaming can do it right, and the first 2 episodes are truly promising. Excellent photography, art direction, and respect for the characters. García Márquez’s magnificent prose needs a voice to emerge from time to time. The plot unfolds smoothly with richness and depth. I loved it, and I was a little skeptical that the magical world of GGM could be translated to the screen. Wall, so far it’s a success in my book..
