Austria in the 18th century. Forests surround the villages. Killing a child causes a woman to be sentenced to death. Agnes prepares for married life with her lover. But her mind and heart become heavy. A bleak lonely road, bad thoughts appear.. Austria’s official submission for the “Best International Feature Film” category of the 97th Academy Awards in 2025.. Depressioncomposed by Anja Plaschg. This film is about depression and suicide in 18th century rural Austria. It’s beautifully shot and we’re told it’s historically accurate and based on real events of real women from that time. This is not a horror movie to be clear. This is not a must see film either. I think it can be an interesting film for psychology students or professionals, and certainly for serious film students. If one is familiar with the depression and is interested in its historical interpretation, this film is relevant. Other than those cases, I would not watch this movie. It’s just grim from start to finish and there’s no redemption for anyone. You will feel sick during and after watching. Again, this is a well-crafted historical perspective on suicide by proxy. I felt it wasn’t necessary to watch this movie to understand that phenomenon.
